When a website is breached, the login details end up in circulation – collected, traded and reused. If one of your staff used their work address to sign up for something years ago, that address and whatever password went with it may well be sitting in a dataset today.

What a result actually means
We would rather be straight about this than alarming. A match means an address and a password appeared in breach data somewhere. It does not mean you have been hacked, and it does not mean anything is happening right now. Plenty of results are ten years old and long since changed.
It matters because people reuse passwords. An old password from a hobby site is a real problem when it is also the one on the accounting system.

Monitoring tells you what leaked. It does not stop anyone using it. What stops them is multi-factor authentication and conditional access – which is why this sits next to our identity work rather than standing alone as a product. A leaked password on an account with MFA is mostly a nuisance. On an account without it, it is a way in.
